Per the IRB, faculty members who offer extra credit in their classes for their students’ participation in research have an obligation to clearly state the following in their syllabi:

1. Students need to be told that research participation is voluntary and that there is another option by which to accrue the same amount of extra credit.
2. The extra credit option(s) need(s) to be of equal or lesser time and difficulty.
3. Students need to be told clearly what the conversion factor is in going from hours of research participation to points of credit in the class.
4. Inform the students of the website, (http://www.experimetrix.com/uci), where they can get the full instructions.

Each quarter that you are offering extra credit for research participation, please send a copy of your syllabus to ssreslab@uci.edu with a brief note that you are offering (extra) credit for research participation.
